5 Reasons to Kayak on Clear Creek Paddle Trail

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

One of League City’s most scenic trails is made up entirely of water. The Clear Creek Paddle Trail winds nearly six miles down Clear Creek and features three boat launches. Here are five reasons why you need to get out on the trail.

1. It’s beautiful

Lush groves of elephant ears and dense clusters of trees lining the creek give the paddle trail a vibrant, jungle-like atmosphere. The emerald hues of the abundant vegetation reflect off the water, surrounding you with gorgeous shades of green. At dusk, the scenery is accented with flashes of pink and orange. Make your Instagram friends jealous and snap some seflies while you’re exploring. Just be sure to keep your smartphone safe in a waterproof phone case.

2. It’s teeming with wildlife

Want to see wildlife? Go where they live. The creek is home to countless birds, and you’ll likely see egrets, herons, and even osprey searching for their next meal. Toss in the possibility of spotting some wild alligators, and you’re in for a memorable journey. There’s something new around every corner, so keep your eye out. You never know what you’ll see on the paddle trail.

3. It makes a great date or family activity

If you’re tired of dinner and a movie, kayaking is a great date alternative. A tandem kayak allows you to share a boat and explore the creek with your significant other. Families also love paddling because it gets the kids outside and away from their devices. It's a fun way for families to connect with nature while spending time together.

4. It’s great exercise

Forget the treadmill. You will burn 300–500 calories per hour when you’re paddling the creek. Your abs, lats, biceps, and forearms will all get a solid workout while you enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous scenery. It’s a win-win.

5. It’s beginner-friendly

Even if you’re brand new to kayaking, you can still enjoy paddling the Clear Creek Paddle Trail. The waterway is narrow and less likely to produce the kind of choppy water that makes lake or ocean paddling an exhausting effort. Three tips for beginners remember: Stay to the sides of the waterway to avoid oncoming boat traffic, wear a life vest, and avoid paddling on an especially windy day—wind makes paddling significantly more challenging. Plan your paddle during calm weather and you’ll have a blast.
